Historicon 2008 Pt. 3

4 08 2008

Friday began with Big Battle DBA Doubles.  I teamed up with Ron Giampapa, using his Med. Scandinavians w/ Med. German allies.  We were paired up against the Two Davids.  Unfortunately, we had a “no decision”, but the Davids were within one bound of taking our camp and breaking all of our commands.  I believe we broke only one of their commands.  Anyways, they beat us on points.  I was stuck on the “don’t lose” side of the table, while the Davids focused their attack on our weaker commands, heroically commanded by my partner.  At least I got to shoot up one of their 6Kn elements. :)

The War Council

Next up we faced Shervin Baloorian and Jonathan Miller with their Condotteri.  This was an ill-fated match-up, as Ron got into a “disagreement” about gaming ettiquette wherein we had to call over a judge.  Ron then failed every combat he rolled for and we were crushed!  Karma, Ron! LoL!

We were doomed...

We were doomed...

Last, we played team Dread, comprised of Mark Pozniak and Hank Drapalski.  This was a close game, and we managed to pull out a win by one element!  Mark and I played a spirited match with back to back command breaking.

Mine and Marks side of the board.

So we went 1-1-1 for our BBDBA outing.  On to Fortune’s Favorites II: Sunny Spain!

This giant battle was a continuation of our first Fortune’s Favorites game at Historicon 2007.  This time, the Senate has pursued the Triumvirate into Spain.

I ended up deploying my army on a very strategic road; however, I was stymied by Rich Gause’s cavalry wing, and a massive string of “1’s” for pips.

My usual roll...

An epic clash of arms!

All told, I had a great time, even if the Senate did pull of another win against the Triumvirate.  Well done, Jeff!

Historicon 2008 Pt. 2

29 07 2008

Thursday continued.

After the Far East tourney it was time to travel to the H.o.t.T Universe where my Isengard army would be facing off against the undead, the Galctic Empire, and the Trade Federation!

Alex Bostwicks Undead army

My first match was against ABos, who trounced me.  Alex was astonished at my rolling 12 “1’s” in a row.  Ouch!

Greek Alex attempts to steam-roll my army.

Alex Halkiadakis was my next opponent. This game ended pretty quickly, with Count Dooku getting encorceled by Saruman.

NExt up, I played David McDonald and his (almost) all shooter army.  I forgot to take pics, but David played very well and rolled some good dice (he managed to bring back Vader after I encorcelled him).  So I went 1-2 in my first HotT tourney.  Thanks to Mike Oneil for running it.

Next up was Hannibal at the Gates run by Mark Poz.  I took my Syracusans and went 2-2.  First off was Larry Chaban’s Later Carthos.

Top-down view. Final rolls were 6-1

Next up I played some lad who just learned the game tha day.  He was pretty excited to be fielding his hoplite army.  I won this one 4-0.

A big fight between terrain features.

Next was a tense battle against Tony Aguilar’s Polybian Romans.  This battle was marked by a littoral landing at the rear of his army.  Tony smacked me in this fight, 4-1 I think.

Our lines never met!

My last fight of the tourney was against Rich Gause’s Gauls.  Rich played like a madman, even after he lost his general.  Final score was 5-3G.

Rich turning my flank, sans general.

Tomorrow I post reports from Friday.

FYI, I will be selling one of my Marian Roman armies with a camp and two elements of spear to morph into Polybian.  Shoot me an email if you are interested. portertm @ gmail dot com

Historicon 2008 Pt.1

28 07 2008

First off, let me say that I am sorry I did not have daily coverage of the con; my hotel had no Internet access.  Like last year, this was a great con, made so by all the great players that our community is known for.  I really feel that I have made some lasting friendships.  The great highlight for me was taking home my first plaque for winning the Asian theme with my mighty Mike’s Models Koreans!  I also learned a heck of a lot this time around.  As I said several times: I came to Historicon not having a clue how to field a Medieval army, and left really enjoying them. I also rolled really, really bad dice this week.  So bad, that my dad actually went to the dealer area to buy me new dice and a new dice cup!

In addition to these reports, I have updated the Victory & Defeat page to reflect my Games at Historicon.  I went 8-8 this year, a far cry from my 9-2-1 record for 1-on-1 DBA from last year. :(   I’ve least been able to manage 1 tourney win per Historicon. :)

I have no pictures from Wednesday night, given that I was totally exhausted and forgot my camera in the car.  I played 3 disastrous games with a loaner army courtesy of Ron Giampapa.  After that, I went back to the hotel to rest.

The next day was a bit better.  The first event was the 2000 Years of Far East Wars themed event.  I took my Koryo Koreans for a spin and did well, suffering only one defeat against a historical match-up: Ron’s Post-Mongol Samurai.

My first battle against Rich Gause and his Tribal Mongolians.

Second battle vs. Ron’s Samurai.

My final battle.  Again, I forget the details…I remember by Arty and bow slaughtering many horsemen.

More to come soon!
